This makes me want to drink BEER
This:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050615/ap_on_re_us/failing_students_1
An article about how teachers in California "urged" to pass kids so they can graduate...

then this:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/warningyourcleverlittleblogcouldgetyoufired;
An article about a guy getting fired for his Blog - (last February, 2004... BFD!!! this is how they make us think things are happening all at once... phooey).

So I go to his Blog, http://gravityspike.blogspot.com and he lives in Seattle and one of his entries talked about a pint. Yum. But I am resisting. I am writing in my Blog so I don't just drink a shiteload of beer. Paranoia being fed by the fact that I shouldn't have a Blog since I'm a teacher. Or maybe I shouldn't say I'm a teacher. On my Blog. But why am I in a profession where I can't speak my mind or be a normal human being? I feel like I am supposed to be June Cleaver, live up to some totally NOT ME persona. Alas... phooey I say again. I was going to post on the Yahoo! message board on the article about how schools all over the country are doing the same thing because NCLB is so totally BOGUS like omigawd.

I do find the dichotomy between the unprecedented ability to instantaniously publish your random thoughts for the world to see and Neo-McCarthyism to be somewhat harrowing. Is NeoMcCarthyism even a real thing? Hmmm... Anyway.. whatever. I wouldn't be normal if I weren't neurotic.

Soooo yeah.

That's that.

Oh looked up Neo-McCarthyism. Don't know if this makes me cool or fucking illiterate, but check it out:

"Neo-McCarthyism is a term used in Dazed and Confused, in a line given from Mike to Pink on the topic of the football coach's decision to implement a contract saying that the signer will not indulge in any illegal activity over the summer. The term McCarthyism is referring to the actions of Senator McCarthy in trying to "root out" communists in the United States of America during the 1950's."

Happy to say that today's featured article is on the Book of Kells! How cool is that? The 8th century - ahhh, THOSE were the good old days.

Dale's Song of the Week

I met him in a swamp down in Dagoba
where it babbles all the time like a giant carbonated soda ... S-O-D-A soda.
I saw the little runt sitting there on a log
I asked him his name, and in a raspy voice he said "Yoda" ....Y-O-D-A yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda.

Well I've been around, but I ain't never seen
a guy who looks like a muppet but he's wrinkled and green, oh my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda.
Well I'm not dumb, but I can't understand
how he can lift me in the air just by raising his hand, oh my Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda,
Yo yo yo yo Yoda.

Well I left home just a week before,
and I've never ever been a jedi before.
But Obi-wan, he set me straight, of course.
He said, "Go to Yoda and he'll show you the force."
Well I'm not the kind that would argue with Ben,
so it looks like I'm gonna start all over again with my Yoda.
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

So I used the force.
I picked up a box.
I lifted some rocks ...
while I stood on my head.
But I won't forget what Yoda said.

He said "Luke stay away from the darker side
and if you start to go astray, let the force be your guide, oh my Yoda.
Yo yo yo yo Yoda.
"I know Darth Vader's really got you annoyed,
but remember if you kill him then you'll be unemployed", oh my Yoda.
Yo yo yo yo Yoda.

Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess.
So I'm gonna hafta leave Yoda, I guess.
But I know that I'll be comin' back some day:
I'll be playin' this part 'til I'm old and gray!

The longterm contract I had to sign
says I'll be makin' these movies 'til the end of time with my Yoda.
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Yoda.
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda
Yo yo yo yo Yoda

(Sung, of course, to the song "Lola" by the Kinks. Written by Weird Al.)

I love DALE!

Neurotechnology...

Last night at a party my husband was talking about this idea for a book he has and it involved people having the same dream (collectively) for like, 2 weeks, and it was the best dream they ever had... then when they are finished the next time they move their bowels they shit these little creatures (I didn't quite catch the size) that go build an alternate universe and then an evil force corrupts it (I don't want to say too much because it's a really neat idea, a la Delicatessen type...).

So this spawned an arguement - one of our skeptical friends said that your brain can make excretions, that it doesn't excrete. I tried (in vain because no one really ever listens to me) to explain that all metabolic processes create byproducts and that of course your brain contributes to some of the materials in your elminations... and of course, this morning I wanted to verify that for my OWN piece of mind... (in case that piece might end up forming it's own alternate universe...) If fish can be found to have elevated progesterone and estrogen levels, then Fraggle like creatures could surely emerge from our turds and form their own universe. I find that incredibly likely in fact.

PostSecret

http://postsecret.blogspot.com/

I spent all the time I was going to use to write something on this Blog looking at PostSecret! It's really cool. I was thinking of secrets that I have that I could send... talk about something that can dredge up the unconscious stuff. Yah - I need to clean my apartment. I'm in the middle of dredging out all the crap we have... I can't believe I have three ironing boards and 5 keyboards. That's kind of ridiculous - maybe there's a connection with BOARDS!!! Hmmm....

I'm going to start another blog dedicated to my Fitness Quest. I've been working with a personal trainer since January, and started seriously trying to be "in shape" since last June. I haven't lost a pound but did manage to lose 6 inches of body fat. Dr. Gosler (that's me since my doctor is really hands off but give me meds if I ask for them) has decided that I am not losing weight because I've been on Lexapro... I had a rough summer last summer, I was completely terrified of going back to work / school (my work is teaching school) and was having these horrible like, mood swings that were more of anxiety than depression... anyway, when I found myself crying in the closet uncontrollably because I accidentally spilled macaroni noodles all over the stove I decided to seek help.

Ok, I'll keep the QUEST here for now. I think it would be neat to have a Blog with the place where I work out so we could post recipies and such. Hmmm.... I also want to have one for Reliv... I am supposedly distributing that stuff now. I bought in... I don't know how gung ho I am about being in the company though, like at full speed. They are so much about doing it for a living... but sometimes I want to just go ahead and buy in at that level on the off chance that I make money at it. I'm too wishy washy to go in to SALES and stuff.

Hey that's negative thinking! I also brought out my Inner Coach today. You know the short sawed off good ole boy one that you had in middle school as a social studies teacher? Every time I have an "I can't do it" thought I'm going to combat it with his voice saying JUST the opposite..."I'M GONNA GET OUT THERE AND SEEEELLLLL" if, and IF that's damn well what I want to do. Just don't know if I want to do that... that's all. Then there's my pseudo book deal thing that's going on. And my JOB, and my yadda yadda yadda... I should really be a cleanin' my house!

bbbrrrrggggllllllleeeee cut.

What the heck is an "ombudsman?"

"An ombudsman is a government official charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints reported by individual citizens. The term arose from its use in Sweden, with the Parliamentary ombudsman instituted in 1809 to safeguard the rights of citizens by establishing a supervisory agency independent of the executive branch. The word ombudsman and its specific meaning has since been adopted in to English as well as other languages, and ombudsmen has been instituted by other governments and organizations such as the European Union.

The origin of the word is found in Old Norse and the word umbuds man, meaning representative. The first preserved use in Swedish is from 1552. It is also used in the other Scandinavian languages such as the Icelandic "umboðsmaður", the Norwegian "ombudsmann" and the Danish "ombudsmand". An ombudsman doesn't necessarily have to be appointed by government; for instance they may work for a corporation, a newspaper, an NGO, or even for the general public. On the other hand, an ombudsman of an non-governmental organization obviously does not carry any special governmental powers or sanction abilities."

I am NOW officially Blogging

Teacher life be damned. If people can make Blogs about their corporations and be disgruntled, I can be an innocent teacher posting on a Blog Site. And this is the second day of my summer off for my first year as a teacher. I am going to write EVERY day about my teacher ennui. After all, am I defined by what I do? Am I now, "a teacher" because that's what I do for a living? Or is it just pure karma... you know some crazy psychic lady told me I have NO real teacher, that I am aligned with my own teacher and will never have an external manifestation of a "guide" or whatever. She also told me that I had to go to India because I was meant to be this great teacher person that would change the world. I didn't go because I asked this Indian guy at the bar (I'd asked for a sign) if I should do that... he said NO go to college if you want to be enlightened. He said I'd get stuck there and have to sell my body to get home. So I listened to him. And I didn't go. Duh. But.... I still have to wonder. I hate being Hippy Spawn. You always think there is some cosmic goddamned reason for your existence. What if it doesn't mean jack shit? I think it doesn't.
